I have well over 100hrs with my assassin/thief/archer character and I was thinking of starting a new game to create either an uber-powerful mage or a sick hand-to-hand combat guy.

Already got 2+ hours into my two-handed guy and it's ridiculous how much easier it is. Using hands is teh uber-tuff.
