I'd think to try to smell the Japanese who were hiding in tunnels and whatnot. Not too sure what the germans had them for. I know pilots regularly had pets at the air bases.

My uncle was a medic in Europe. He's got some great stories about this guy in his unit that found a Shepard at an abandoned SS head quarters. He was the only person the dog liked in their whole unit.

Unrelated to WWII, but highly recommended is "Good to Go" by Harry Constance, veitnam SEAL extrordinar who did some dog handling as well with a German Sheppard. Might be suprised how effect the dog was, when it was dry enough to use.

Chips was his name, he was awarded a Silver Star and Purple Heart..

"Chips was a true hero -- but his Silver Star for valor and a Purple Heart were taken away because he was categorized as mere "equipment"."

at least the WW2 war dogs were brought home, and many spent the remiander of their lives as pets for their handlers. Whats really sad is this "equipment" mentality remained and most of the "equipment" used in Vietnam was euthanized upon the US pull-out to prevent them from being used by the NVA
