I have 3 computers in my house, 1 is this machine that i use for gaming,2 is a reserved machine that runs only my recording program,no internet, 3 is a machine i use rarely but all systems were go.
#'s 3&1 iare on a 4 port switch and all ports work in all tests performed. #3 machine suddenly lost internet connection, After troubleshooting i replaced the cat 5 cable and the nic card and still no internet, i can run the cat 5 straight from my modem and still nothing, i can loop it around and get internet up here on this machine(#1) with the new cat 5 so i know it works. This afternoon i took it to my friends house and hooked it up to his connection and we had internet immediately. I brought it back here and nothing Why cant i get that machine to connect ? it's 6 years old but there is nothing wrong with it, it's still a good custom built machine. Asus a7v600,athalon 2400 cpu and 2 gig mem, XP pro. I'm freking lost, theres nothing wrong with the cable/nic/machine. HELP !! _________________ ![]() ![]() |

then it sounds like you're troubleshooting the wrong layer
can you do a traceroute to google.com? if not, can you do a traceroute to 74.125.45.99? _________________

If you have internet access, then you should be able to run a trace route to google.com for sure. Or are you making your forum posts from another computer right now?

I'm on my main computer Ted, no problems with that one at all. Just for good measure i'm going to exchange the new cat 5 and see what happens. I'm wondering though, it seems that this problem popped up when i installed win 7 on my main machine, perhaps theres something there thats blocking my signal. I dont know anymore. ![]() _________________ ![]() ![]() |

probably need to go into each machine and set the home network name to the same as on your main machine

I put my xp disk in it and decided to
and i get :"Windows system error There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network" I get the same message up here but I'm plugged into the same switch and i have internet up here. I'm guessing that maybe my switch crapped out, but like i said, i cant even get it to connect straight from my modem. ![]() _________________ ![]() ![]() |

why dont you just give pc # 3 a static address and be done with it?
not sure of your scheme but most are 192.168.1.1 sub so use this? ip: 192.168.1.20 sub: 255.255.255.0 gw: 192.168.1.1 dns: 192.168.1.1 should allow you to get out etc. further diagnostics.... can you ping 127.0.0.1 that will sometimes help to tell if the nic card is bad. -Carbon |

Ok, Tonite i bought a new hd,a router and a new nic card.
In the morning i'm going to install all of the above parts and OS and hopefully it should fix my problems. I got the hd because it was a very good buy, WD Sata 500 gig for $60.00. I really need to stop worrying about a machine that i rarely use but most of you will agree on this, it's just not cool to have a part of your network down if you have the knowledge and tools needed to set it straight. _________________ ![]() ![]() |

The thing will not see my new hd but if i put it in an enclosure win 7 sees it just fine.
fuck it i'm going to slap a different hd in there and use my 500 gig as backup somewhere else. _________________ ![]() ![]() |
